Talk: Grace, free will and necessity in Aquinas

By Carlo Crivelli. 1476.

This is an audio recording of a talk I’ve given in a couple of places. The title is ‘Grace, free will and necessity in Aquinas’, and it looks at the question of whether a person can deserve praise or blame for something willed necessarily.

I look first of all at what Aquinas says about this, focusing on the Disputed Questions on Truth and the Summa Theologiae, before offering a critique of Aquinas’s views on this.

There was a handout for this but unfortunately I have lost it.

The talk is just over 40 minutes long and the MP3 file, which can be downloaded below, is 40 Mb.
